Choosing a water softener: tackling limescale head-on

Across greater Waregem, mains water sits around 35° fH — quite hard. A softener is no longer a luxury, but which type to pick?

Choosing a water softener: tackling limescale head-on

Hard water is no disaster, but it costs you something every month: soap that lathers less, scale on taps, shorter life on boilers and washing machines. In greater Waregem the mains sits between 30 and 38° fH (French hardness) — well above the recommended 15° fH. Time to see what a softener does.

When does a softener make sense?

Rule of thumb: above 25° fH a softener pays back in 5–7 years. Below that it is comfort, not necessity. We measure hardness on every quote with a titration test — free, two minutes.

  • Boiler needing descaling every 4 years? Points to water > 30° fH.
  • White spots on black taps within a week? Classic hard water.
  • Hot water energy bill higher than expected? Scale insulates inside the boiler.
  • Eczema or itchy skin after a shower? Often hard-water-related.

Three softener types

Not every "softener" does the same. Three technologies, three very different price points.

  • Ion exchanger (classic, salt-based): the standard. Effective, reliable, needs salt top-ups. €1,500 – €2,500 installed.
  • Magnetic / electronic: no maintenance, no salt, but effectiveness is disputed. €200 – €600. Not our recommendation for real results.
  • Polyphosphate doser: for smaller installations (boiler protection), binds scale but does not really soften. €80 – €200.

Where to place a softener?

Right after the main meter, before any branches. Best to leave the outdoor tap and irrigation alone — they do not need softened water. We always provide a bypass for the garden loop. The unit itself takes 60 × 30 cm of floor space and needs a drain (sewer) and a power socket.

A softener is a €2,000-ish investment that pays back over 5–7 years. But more important than the price is picking the right type — and we are happy to advise.
